World Peace Day 2016: - GOAL 6: Clean Water and Sanitation - Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all

Category: World Peace Day 2016

THE FACTS:Clean, accessible water for all is an essential part of the world we want to live in. There is sufficient fresh water on the planet to achieve this. But due to bad economics or poor infrastructure, every year millions of people, most of them children, die from diseases associated with inadequate water supply, sanitation and hygiene. Water scarcity, poor water quality and inadequate sanitation negatively impact food security, livelihood choices and educational opportunities for poor families across the world. Drought afflicts some of the world’s poorest countries, worsening hunger and malnutrition.

At the national level, WANEP works with emergency and natural disaster agencies and other relevant authorities to tackle issues of floods and water related disasters. In addition, WANEP through its Civil Society and Democratic Governance (CSDG) program urges African governments’ to enhance transparency in the inclusion of affected communities in the judicious management of their natural resources especially water, land and other mineral resources. According to WANEP Executive Director, Mr. Chukwuemeka Eze, Africans “desire and deserve the best of our continent. In this regard, we desire democracy and governance with a Human Security Face which is key to dealing with underlying structural factors and Relative Deprivation!”
