GOAL 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls

THE FACT:While the world has achieved progress towards gender equality and women’s empowerment under the Millennium Development Goals (including equal access to primary education between girls and boys), women and girls continue to suffer discrimination and violence in every part of the world. Gender equality is not only a fundamental human right, but a necessary foundation for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world.

WANEP’s gender policy recognizes that gender roles have contributed to discrimination and oppression at regional and global levels therefore, in order to combat these inequalities, all WANEP operations and peacebuilding initiatives take into account the differential impact of policies and programmes on both men’s  and women’s lives because of their traditional roles and responsibilities. WANEP believes that gender equality requires equal enjoyment by women and men of socially-valued goods, opportunities, resources and rewards. It recognizes that gender does not mean that men and women become the same, but that their opportunities and life chances are equal. WANEP advocates for an Africa where men, women, girls, boys, children and everybody is not discriminated upon and where fairness and justice abound in the distribution of benefits and responsibilities between and amongst all segments of the society.
