The Gambia Chapter of the West Africa Network for Peace building (WANEP) was established in August 2003. WANEP-The Gambia is a legally registered not-for-profit organization with a membership of 20 civil society organizations working towards strengthening the capacity of peace building practitioners, governmental and non-governmental institutions, and developing conflict prevention networks and mechanisms to promote the culture of peace and advocate for structures and policies that will enhance democratic and socio-economic development.

WANEP-The Gambia is one of the leading and nationally recognized peace building organizations working at community and national level in the Gambia. With latent conflicts, a fledgling democracy and troubled neighbours (Casamance, Guinea Bissau and Guinea), peace in the Gambia can no longer be taken for granted. It is incumbent on civil society in the Gambia to undertake proactive measures towards building a sustainable peace which is essential to the foundation of democracy, human rights, justice and long-term development.
