GOAL 10: Reduced Inequalities- Reduce inequality within and among countries

THE FACTS:The international community has made significant strides towards lifting people out of poverty.  The most vulnerable nations – the least developed countries, the landlocked developing countries and the small island developing states – continue to make inroads into poverty reduction.  However, inequality still persists and large disparities remain in access to health and education services and other assets. There is growing consensus that economic growth is not sufficient to reduce poverty if it is not inclusive and if it does not involve the three dimensions of sustainable development – economic, social and environmental.

  • By 2030, progressively achieve and sustain income growth of the bottom 40 per cent of the population at a rate higher than the national average
  • By 2030, empower and promote the social, economic and political inclusion of all, irrespective of age, sex, disability, race, ethnicity, origin, religion or economic or other status
  • Ensure equal opportunity and reduce inequalities of outcome, including by eliminating discriminatory laws, policies and practices and promoting appropriate legislation, policies and action in this regard

WANEP holds that exclusion hits at the nerve centre of people’s identity because it bases itself on discrimination. Exclusion happens because of imbalances of power and safeguarding one groups’ control over processes and resources that are seen as essential for survival. In order to reduce inequalities and ensure equal opportunity for all and sundry, WANEP calls for a true government of the people, by the people and for the people that will lead to the desired dividends of democracy for Africans. Inclusivity allows us as a people to share in the designing and envisioning processes of our various states not just as onlookers but as key stakeholders. WANEP joins the global call to advocate for a reduction in inequality, and enact policies that should be universal in principle while paying attention to the needs of disadvantaged and marginalized populations.
