  • PDF

As the world gears up to mark the 2016 International Day of Peace, under the theme “The Sustainable Development Goals: Building Blocks for Peace.” WANEP believes that the achievement of sustainable peace is a collective responsibility and shares in the belief that “everyone has a stake and everyone has a contribution to make in order to achieve peace!” As part of activities to mark the 2016 World Peace day, WANEP recognizes that although some progress has been made in the implementation of the SDGs however, more still needs to be done. In this wise WANEP wishes to draw attention to some of these challenges and share its work on how the SDGs can help to bring about sustainable peace.

This series will run from September 5 to 21, 2016. Happy reading!

GOAL 1: End Poverty in all its forms everywhere

THE FACT:Extreme poverty rates have been cut by more than half since 1990. While this is a remarkable achievement, one in five people in developing regions still live on less than $1.25 a day, and there are millions more who make little more than this daily amount, plus many people risk slipping back into poverty. Poverty is more than the lack of income and resources to ensure a sustainable livelihood. Its manifestations include hunger and malnutrition, limited access to education and other basic services, social discrimination and exclusion as well as the lack of participation in decision-making.

·      The overwhelming majority of people living on less than $1.25 a day belong to two regions: Southern Asia and sub-Saharan Africa

·      High poverty rates are often found in small, fragile and conflict-affected countries

·      Every day in 2014, 42,000 people had to abandon their homes to seek protection due to conflict

WANEP through its national networks have been building capacity of women groups and other member organizations in small and medium scale enterprises. WANEP believes that for sustained economic growth, there is need to invest in conflict early warning, prevention and post- conflict reconstruction that delivers on human security and alleviates poverty.
