Launching of WPP-Africa Regional Desk

The Africa Regional Desk on Thursday 21st August 2008 was formally launched in Accra.  The ceremony brought together eminent and leading women activists in Africa. The Desk Coordinator Madam Akos Dzathor gave a brief overview of the Desk since its inception in June 2007.  The Desk in the next three years she stated will select and train women in gender sensitive active non -violence activities to enable them serve as Active non-violence peace trainers on the continent. This in the long run she continues will reduce considerably, the incidence of violent conflicts in the Africa. 

The Minister of Women and Children’s Affairs in Ghana Hon. Hajia Alima Mahama delivered the Keynote address and formally launched the Desk.  She was positive that African women could do something to prevent conflicts on the continent. She stated that gender equality was an integral part of achieving a peaceful society and lauded WPP for harmonizing the government’s efforts at ensuring peace and security in Africa. 

Solidarity messages were presented by Isabelle Geuskens the programme Manager WPP, Joy Mbaabu the Regional Board Chairman from Kenya, Netsai Mushonga board member from Zimbabwe, and Dorothy Attema Regional Development Officer WPP.  The programme was chaired by Mr. Kallie Sillah Lead Researcher, West Africa Network for Peace Building (WANEP).
