Stakeholders Analysis
Stakeholders
in conflict are those with direct or indirect interest in the conflict. They may
either directly benefit or suffer the consequences of the conflict. National,
regional, international stakeholders are said to be behind the civil war in Liberia.
As negotiations continue this week WARN finds it necessary to shed light on the
current stakeholders in the Liberian conflict, their power bases, interests, and
alliances. The primary stakeholders are the government, rebel factions, political
parties, and civil society organizations.
The
Americo-Liberians
WARN
has distinguished the Americo-Liberians from the Charles Taylor leadership as
many of this group have withdrawn support from Charles Taylor because of his brutal
policy. The Americo-Liberians like the Krahn and Mandigo ethnic groups badly want
to return to Liberia and resume their basic 'plantation life' mainly to protect
their properties. They also feel strongly that they have an opportunity to return
to power as the "country people" have demonstrated incompetence during their 10-year
rule. This theory is the driving force behind their come-back strategies. Meanwhile
it is evidently clear that any body gaining state power may need the support and
expertise of some individuals from this group primarily due to their long standing
experience in governance and international connection.
