The 6th session of the West Africa Peacebuilding Institute (WAPI), running from 3rd to 21st September 2007 has started in Accra, Ghana. WAPI is a capacity building program in Peacebuilding practice with particular focus on West Africa and organised annually by the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP). WAPI-2007 is organised in collaboration with the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) with financial support from German Technical Cooperation (GTZ). The opening ceremony was presided over by the Honourable Kwamena Bartels, Ghana’s Minister of the Interior. WANEP’s partners including GTZ, Catholic Relief Service (CRS), CARE International and representatives from diplomatic missions in Ghana, the media and representatives of Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) attended the opening ceremony.

Six courses are being offered with two of them running concurrently per week. Forty three participants from 22 countries are attending WAPI-2007.

WAPI is a concrete example of a Civil Society effort in contributing to build capacities for violent conflict prevention. WANEP recognizes that nowhere is the need for violent conflict prevention more urgent than in West Africa and the continent at large.

WANEP with deep gratitude appreciates the support of GTZ and the German Government. WANEP also continues to appreciate the support of the Department for International Development (DFID) of the British Government, CRS, CARE International and all its partners. WANEP makes particular mention of the contribution of the International Action Network on Small Arms (IANSA) in sending advocacy material in support of WAPI 2007.
