The
West Africa Peacebuilding Institute (WAPI) organized annually by West
Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP) is taking place at the Kofi
Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) in Accra from
4th - 23rd September 2005. In welcoming
participants from various organizations and institutions including Civil
Society and Government personnel from Africa, the Executive Director of
the WANEP, Emmanuel Bombande emphasized on the to need to build capacity
for conflict prevention in Africa.
In many
African countries Civil Society Organizations (CSOS) are divided along
partisan political lines and become very active in deepening the divide
and polarization along political lines. This character makes the CSOs
irrelevant in the political and social discourse towards strengthening
democratic reforms and practicing good governance. In other countries
however, CSOs have contributed meaningfully in framing the vision for
peace and working to enhance peace and stability ensuring the promotion
of human security for all people. There are therefore lessons to learn
from the cross fertilization of these diverse experiences. WAPI is a
good ground for the sharing of these exchanges around critical concepts,
frameworks and best practice in peacebuilding.
The Commandant of the KAIPTC, Major
General John Attipoe who formally
opened WAPI 2005 welcomed participants to the Kofi Annan International
Peacekeeping Training Centre and to the first West African Peace-building
Institute to be hosted at the Centre.... Read More
