WAPI 2010 ENDS

WAPI 2010 came to a close on September 17, 2010 with a total of 30 participants trained. The Deputy Commandant of KAIPTC, Brigadier-General George K. Adjei, who chaired the closing ceremony commended WANEP and its partners especially GTZ for the effort put into conducting this annual training which has contributed to the capacity building needs of peacebuilding practitioners from both national and international organisations including ECOWAS, the UN personnel and civil society organisations over the past nine years.

The Executive Director of WANEP, Mr. Emmanuel Bombande thanked all the participants and all those who made WAPI 2010 a great success. He expressed WANEP’s profound gratitude to GTZ and the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre for their continuous and sustained support to WAPI. He ended by appreciating the participants for their passion and conviction to work for peace in Africa.

The West Africa Peacebuilding Institute (WAPI) 2010 opens at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training, Accra

The 9th training session of the West Africa Peacebuilding Institute (WAPI), running from 30th August to 17th September 2010 has commenced at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training, Accra, Ghana. WAPI, a capacity building program in peacebuilding practice is organised annually by the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP) in collaboration with the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) and with partial support from the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ).

Welcoming participants and invited guests and the media during the official opening ceremony, the Commandant of KAIPTC Air Vice Marshall (AVM) CEK Dovlo reflected on the challenging context of peace, stability and human security in West Africa and commended the efforts of credible civil society organisations such as WANEP for their continued and sustained efforts in contributing to conflict prevention and peacebuilding in Africa.

The Guest of Honour and keynote speaker, Minister of Interior of the Republic of Ghana, represented by his Deputy, Hon. Dr. Kwesi Apea-Kubi, formally opened the 2010 WAPI session. In an incising keynote address, the Deputy Minister acknowledged and appreciated the recent paradigm shift toward conflict prevention and transformation and the fact that the international community, regional organisations and governments have intensified their efforts through the development of multi-throng strategies to address the complex nature of conflict and post-conflict reconstruction processes. He reiterated that these efforts and initiatives have become possible through government with civil society organisation such as WANEP.

This year, five courses are being offered. A total of 30 participants from 15 countries are attending WAPI 2010. Apart from participants from West Africa, there are participants from Chad, Cameroon, Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan and USA. Over the years since its inception, WAPI has trained peacebuilding practitioners from all over Africa as well as Germany, Italy, USA, Australia, Palestine and India. WAPI continues to be a concrete example of a Civil Society effort in building capacities for violent conflict prevention and transformation not only in Africa but the world at large.

WEST AFRICA PEACEBUILDING INSTITUTE (WAPI) 2010

Introduction
The West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP) is one of the leading organizations in peacebuilding, conflict prevention, transformation and mitigation in Africa. The mandate of WANEP is to build the capacity of peacebuilding, development and human rights practitioners in West Africa in peace and security issues to promote and protect human security through context specific tools and indigenous techniques. To fulfil its mandate, WANEP holds each year, a three-week training session in peacebuilding at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) in Accra, Ghana.

Course Description
The West Africa Peacebuilding Institute (WAPI) is a three-week intensive training session to provide specialized, intensive, and culturally sensitive training in conflict transformation and peacebuilding. The training covers a range of courses on theories and practice of Peacebuilding, Facilitated Dialogue and Mediation; Women and Gender Mainstreaming in Peacebuilding; Youth and Peace Education, Human Security and Peacebuilding, Early Warning and Early Response (Building community capacity for preventive peacebuilding).

Course Aim
The aim of WAPI is to provide specialized, intensive, and culturally sensitive training in conflict transformation and peacebuilding to individuals, Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), Policymakers, and other relevant actors from West Africa and beyond.

Entry Requirements

  • Individuals working in the field of peacebuilding, human rights, youth in peacebuilding, development, Gender.
  • Policymakers, government officials, Intergovernmental organisations, and other relevant actors from West Africa and beyond.

  • Introduction to Peacebuilding Paradigms, Facilitated Dialogue and Mediation
  • Justice-Building & Conflict Resolution

Session II – 6th – 10th September

  • Youth and Peace Education
  • Human Security & Peacebuilding

Session III – 13th – 17th September

  • Women & Gender Mainstreaming in Peacebuilding.
  • Early Warning and Early Response: Building Community Capacity for Preventive Peacebuilding

  • The course is residential and course participants will be accommodated at the KAIPTC.
  • Problem Based Learning (PBL) and facilitation will be employed as teaching methods.
  • Guest facilitators/presenters with field experiences will be invited to enrich the course content, if necessary.
