The Special Representative to the UN Secretary General for West Africa and the Sahel, Dr. Ibn Chambas has expressed profound appreciation to the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP) and other civil society organizations for their role in ensuring the success of the joint UN/AU/ ECOWAS Mission to The Gambia. He made the assertion during the consultative meeting held on May 4, 2016 between the Joint Mission and CSO coalition on Gambian elections led by WANEP. The mission was in Banjul from May 4-5, 2016 to hold consultations with key government officials as well as various stakeholders in preparation for the upcoming elections in The Gambia.
Dr. Chambas said the consultations provided a platform for the Joint Mission to interface with civil society organizations, particularly WANEP, and various stakeholders to support an inclusive, open, credible and peaceful electoral process in the Gambia. Speaking in the same vein, Mr. Marcel de Souza, President of the ECOWAS Commission thanked the coalition and also expressed his delight in meeting the different stakeholders. He stressed that the consultations are vital to the success of the electoral process and will help in reducing political tensions as well as create a conducive environment for free, fair, transparent and inclusive elections in The Gambia.
The Joint UN/AU/ ECOWAS Mission is a clear indication of the International community’s readiness to support the type of change that can yield sustainable peace in the country. During the consultations, the stakeholders deliberated on issues such as the setting up of an Election Situation Room as suggested by WANEP, strengthening the Inter Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) for it to be functional and the need to support the Gambian government to set up a Human Rights Commission.
