The Ivorian Political Crisis: Sustaining Preventive Diplomatic Efforts for a Peaceful Settlement on the Principle of Respecting the Will of the People of la Cote d’Ivoire

Accra, January 26, 2011 – While all efforts so far from the authority of Heads of State of the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) and the African Union (AU) have been deployed to ensure a peaceful settlement to the current protracted political crisis in Cote d’Ivoire, it is regrettable that the political discourse is polarized along the divide of whether or not to use military intervention to end the crisis.

As the implementing partner of the ECOWAS Early Warning and Response Network (ECOWARN) and the West Africa representative of the Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict (GPPAC), the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP), through its national network in Cote d’Ivoire (WANEP-CI), continues to closely monitor the Ivorian political crisis while documenting the destructions and atrocities that have occurred since the proclamation of the provisionary results of the presidential elections on 2nd December 2010.
