Within the framework of the EWARDS project funded and managed by USAID and ARD Inc. respectively, WANEP held a training seminar facilitated by the University of Maryland in the United States on the production of a biannual report entitled Peace and Conflict in West Africa.

Held in Accra, Ghana from 30th August to 3rd September, the training seminar was the first of two training seminars in a bid to transfer the technical know-how and expertise to be producing the Peace and Conflict in West Africa (PACWA) report which provides on a periodic basis the risk scores regarding the structural vulnerability of each country in West Africa.

The PACWA report will add to the repertoire of WANEP’s early warning, peace and conflict products. The importance of the PACWA report is that it provides a long-term structural early warning signal with recommendations for long-term engagements and response options. The PACWA report will be complemented by WANEP’s policy briefs which come out at a regular interval and focuses on short-term and proximate early warning signals and response options.

The first edition of PACWA has already been produced by University of Maryland (click on the link to access the first edition) and it is also expected that they will produce the second edition that will be out in October 2010 with input from WANEP, while the third and subsequent editions will be produced wholly by WANEP Regional Secretariat together with its four zonal Coordinators across West Africa.
