Press Release in commemoration of International Women’s Day for Peace and Disarmament

Small Arms and Light Weapons: Threat to Peace and Human Security in West Africa.

The preamble to the ECOWAS Convention on Small Arms and Light Weapons recognizes that illegal possession and misuse of small arms and light weapons remains a destabilizing factor in the sub region, posing a serious threat to the peace and stability of states. The violent conflagrations that were recorded in Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Cote D’Ivoire, as well as insecurity and instability in other ECOWAS states all have their roots in the uncontrolled illegal trade in small arms and light weapons.
