January, 2010 - Press Release on the JOS crisis, Nigeria

The West Africa Network for Peacebuilding Nigeria on behalf of its over 300 member organisations spread across the six geo political zone wishes to express deepest concern and disenchantment to the recent religious related violence in the city of Jos, Plateau State which occurred between Sunday 17 to Tuesday January 19, 2010.

This unfortunate crisis, triggered by deeper rooted distrust and suspicion among Christians and Muslims residents in Jos North and South Local Governments have resulted in reported fatalities of more than 200 deaths and, serious injury to more than 700 persons and the internal displacement of more than 10,000 persons.

The West Africa Network for Peacebuilding Nigeria on behalf of its over 300 member organisations spread across the six geo political zone wishes to express deepest concern and dismay at the recent unprovoked attack on the people of Dogo Na Hauwa Community of Jos South Local Government Area, Plateau State. An attack reported to have been perpetuated in the early hours of Sunday 7th of March 2010 by suspected hoodlums. This unfortunate incident recorded a reported cumulative death of over 300 women and children making it the highest occurrence of gender related death at a single incident in the history of violent conflicts with ethno-religious undertones in northern Nigeria.

COMMITMENTS AND STATEMENTS OF THE STAKEHOLDERS ROUND TABLE CONSULTATIONS IN THE SEARCH FOR LASTING PEACE IN BAWKU

We, community leaders from Bawku in our individual capacities and working collectively on behalf of our various communities, with the support of the Upper East caucus of Members of Parliament, the Northern Development Forum [NDF] and the National Peace Council [NPC], having committed ourselves through the first and second round table consultations from 12th to 14th March 2010 and 7th to 9th May 2010 respectively in the search for lasting peace in Bawku and having sustained a spirit of a mutual search for peace within our communities under the auspices of civil society facilitation led by the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding [WANEP] and supported by the UNDP, IBIS-West Africa and the Government of Finland;

National Consultative Meeting for the Establishment of WANEP-CAPE VERDE in Praia

Since its inception in 1998, WANEP has established national networks in 12 out of the 15 ECOWAS member states in West Africa. In the remaining three countries, Cape Verde, Mali and Niger, WANEP has been represented through focal points and its early warning monitors.

With financial support from USAID under the Early Warning and Response Design Support (EWARDS), and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Government of Finland under the project “integrated and Collaborative Conflict Prevention and Crisis Management in West Africa”, WANEP held a consultative meeting in Praia, Cape Verde on April 30th and May 1st 2010, at the Morabi conference hall to establish a fully functional national network. The consultative meeting, coordinated by REDMEC and facilitated by WANEP Regional Secretariat, brought together CSOs and other stakeholders in Cape Verde to develop a roadmap for the establishment of WANEP-Cape Verde

WANEP organizes a two-day orientation exercise on the use of ECOWAS Early Warning and Response Network (ECOWARN) for Its National Networks.

The West Africa Network for Peacebuilding in continuous fulfillment of its obligation as the Civil Society Partner to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on the implementation and operationalisation of the ECOWAS Early Warning system (ECOWARN) organized an orientation exercise for its 14 National Networks Coordinators, 4 Zonal Coordinators and key regional staff from May 17 to 18 2010 on the use of the ECOWARN system at the Mensvic Grand Hotel in Accra Ghana.
