Annual

Strategic
Priorities 2002:
Justice and Reconciliation
In the words of Botman and Petersen, as a region “ . . .we are
confronting the demons of our past, to exorcise them so that we
may build the kind of communities reconciled to face the future.”
The greatest challenge in this process is how to hold together
truth, justice and reconciliation so that they give birth to a
new dispensation where justpeace would prevail. In Sierra Leone,
Liberia and Ghana processes for addressing the past and healing
divided memories are being debated. Also, these societies are
wrestling with the challenges of instituting judicial reforms
and understanding new conventions for human and people’s rights.
Through this one-year study process, WANEP and its partners will
conduct a survey of legal institutions in West Africa, the justice
and peace commissions of the Catholic Church in West Africa as
well as human rights institutions in the region. The goal is to
assess their capacities and to design framework for regional cooperation
to promote judicial reform and strengthen civil society and church
based human rights organizations.
