Côte
d'Ivoire Crisis: WANEP
Policy Briefs Update - December 3, 2002
Best
case scenario
The present
tension subsides and an acceptable peace deal signed between the government
and the MPCI. With the help and collaboration of all regional stakeholders
and the international community, the western rebellion joins in the
peace negotiations. The international community reacts positively, by
drifting from an apparently nonchalant position, and takes firm and
concerted action and put an end to the anarchy in Côte d'Ivoire which
is already a dangerous precedent.
The traditional
fraternal relations between Côte d'Ivoire and her northern neighbours-Burkina
Faso and Mali are restored following the December 3 meeting in Bamako
between Gbagbo, Compaoré, and host Amadou Toumani Touré. The permanent
state of suspicion and accusations become history and a new relationship
is sealed as the foreigner syndrome and xenophobia gives way for recognition
and acceptance. The land law in Côte d'Ivoire is revised and the ivoirité
concept reformed. Regional economic cooperation reinforced and consolidated..
